57 Free Marketing Tools to Build Your Online Presence

Have you ever been on a Twitter Chat? 

Last week I received an invitation from my good friend Ian to join him on one of the weekly Twitter Chats that SEMRush host. 

Like Ian, I have a keen interest in tools and technology, so it was a no-brainer to attend given the subject was: The Best Free Marketing Tools for SMEs. 

It was my first Twitter Chat, so I thought I'd share the experience with you here. 

Plus I've compiled a complete list of the Best Free Marketing Tools for you to download. 


What is a Twitter Chat?

This is a good description by Nicole Miller from the Buffer team:

A Twitter chat is where a group of Twitter users meet at a pre-determined time to discuss a certain topic, using a designated hashtag (#) for each tweet contributed.

A host or moderator will pose questions (designated with Q1, Q2…) to prompt responses from participants (using A1, A2…) and encourage interaction among the group.

Chats typically last an hour. 

​What tools do you need for a Twitter Chat?

You can use the standard Twitter tool, no need for anything else, but you might find specific tools can help. 

If you spend any time looking at your normal Twitter timeline you'll know how quickly the tweets flow. On a Twitter Chat they go faster - much faster!!

I should have researched more before hand on the best tool to use, but I left it to the last minute - tut, tut!

However, the above mentioned Buffer article also has a number of good suggestions of Twitter Chat tools that you can try:

Which Twitter Chat Tool did I use?

As I was ill-prepared, I used a variety!! 

I used the standard Twitter app by entering the hashtag ​#semrushchat into the search bar. This was my baseline.

I also fired up Tweetchat, Hootsuite and Tweetdeck.

But I definitely didn't use them all at once! Looking at one stream was difficult enough.

Suffice to say, I'm sure each tool has its merits and you will most likely be more comfortable with something you know and use. For example, if you're a Hootsuite user then I'm sure you would be quite happy adding another stream to your dashboard and following the chat in there.

I can't make a recommendation after just one Twitter chat, but here are a few observations:

  • I didn't find Tweetdeck very easy to use - it's too busy for my liking
  • Tweetchat was more beneficial and I think with a bit more practice and familiarity it could prove to be very useful 
  • In the end I reverted back to good old plain Twitter and tchat.io

I have to say my initial reaction was Google! But of course Google is a company with many tools...

Often we can get sucked into thinking that there is a tool for everything. But we forget ourselves and the amazing array of tools that we already have built-in to our human body.

Final Thoughts

I made it to the end of my first Twitter Chat!

It was a breathtaking experience, a bit like a roller coaster ride. Just when you finish one circuit another question pops up and you're off again.
