57 Free Marketing Tools to Build Your Online Presence
Have you ever been on a Twitter Chat?
Like Ian, I have a keen interest in tools and technology, so it was a no-brainer to attend given the subject was: The Best Free Marketing Tools for SMEs.
It was my first Twitter Chat, so I thought I'd share the experience with you here.
Plus I've compiled a complete list of the Best Free Marketing Tools for you to download.
What is a Twitter Chat?
This is a good description by Nicole Miller from the Buffer team:
What tools do you need for a Twitter Chat?
You can use the standard Twitter tool, no need for anything else, but you might find specific tools can help.
If you spend any time looking at your normal Twitter timeline you'll know how quickly the tweets flow. On a Twitter Chat they go faster - much faster!!
I should have researched more before hand on the best tool to use, but I left it to the last minute - tut, tut!
However, the above mentioned Buffer article also has a number of good suggestions of Twitter Chat tools that you can try:
Which Twitter Chat Tool did I use?
As I was ill-prepared, I used a variety!!
I used the standard Twitter app by entering the hashtag #semrushchat into the search bar. This was my baseline.
I also fired up Tweetchat, Hootsuite and Tweetdeck.
But I definitely didn't use them all at once! Looking at one stream was difficult enough.
Suffice to say, I'm sure each tool has its merits and you will most likely be more comfortable with something you know and use. For example, if you're a Hootsuite user then I'm sure you would be quite happy adding another stream to your dashboard and following the chat in there.
I can't make a recommendation after just one Twitter chat, but here are a few observations:
- I didn't find Tweetdeck very easy to use - it's too busy for my liking
- Tweetchat was more beneficial and I think with a bit more practice and familiarity it could prove to be very useful
- In the end I reverted back to good old plain Twitter and tchat.io
Onto the Twitter Chat subject then...
The Best Free Marketing Tools for SMEs
The SEMRush Team organised seven questions for this Twitter Chat.
I'll list the questions below, followed by some summary tweets from the chat to give you a flavour of what tools were discussed...
Q1: How should SME's define and choose the set of tools they need?
Good starter. There's no point using a tool just for the sake of it.
A1) define what you are trying to achieve before searching for a tool #semrushchat— David Hartshorne (@davidhartshorne) January 13, 2016
This is a favourite quote of mine from Adam Connell:
The key to using #tools effectively is to only use the ones you feel you need. ~ @adamjayc #quote
A1: Find tools that you will use on a regular, consistent basis. It's so easy to clutter workflow with fun/fluff tools. #semrushchat— Medium Blue (@MediumBlueSEM) January 13, 2016
Q2: What tools can marketers use to grow their audience via social media and email?
Social media tools...bound to be loads of these, right?
Q3: How can SME's improve their content marketing strategy with tools? What tools should they use?
Google tools featured heavily in this section alongside SEMRush and Moz Bar.
But as Ian pointed out there isn't One Tool to Rule Them All:
Remember, there is no 'One Tool To Rule Them All' - find a selection and learn to use them well! @iagdotme
Don't forget the CoSchedule Headline Analyzer Tool - one of my favourites!
Q4: What are the best free productivity apps and tools for increasing efficiency and saving time?
As you can imagine there were a load of answers to this question.
I thought this was a good answer from Angela as I'm also a fan of Pocket and Buffer:
And this was a great common sense tip from Barry:
A4. Organise your Chrome bookmarks. If you use something a lot it should be only a click away. #semrushchat— Barry Kobama (@callis1987) January 13, 2016
Often we miss the simple organisational things like bookmarking to help us be more efficient.
Which of these tools are you using?
Q5: What tools should business owners use for market research and quickly auditing their team's effort?
Some more love for SEMRush and BuzzSumo again on the research side. And then Google Analytics for checking on results.
Q6: If you could take ownership of one tool available on the entire web, which one would you choose?
I have to say my initial reaction was Google! But of course Google is a company with many tools...
Here are the favourite tools that emerged from the discussion...
Q7: Are there any marketing activities that tools can’t help with? If so, which ones?
This was a great question to finish off with.
Often we can get sucked into thinking that there is a tool for everything. But we forget ourselves and the amazing array of tools that we already have built-in to our human body.
Here's a couple of answers I liked:
A7. You can't teach empathy or show someone their voice, a tool can't make you understand base concepts. #semrushchat— Chris Desadoy (@EliteYouTubePro) January 13, 2016
I made it to the end of my first Twitter Chat!
Thanks to Ian for the invitation and to SEMRush for hosting the fastest hour in my life!
